South African rap-artist coming to the Göteborg Book Fair
South African contemporary poet, playwright and rap-artist Lesego Rampolokeng will make a visit to Göteborg Book fair this year.
Rampolokeng was born in 1965 in Soweto and brought up in the shantytowns outside Johannesburg.
His stepfather beat him to start studying law at university, but he gave up his studies after only a short period of time, and started a family in a desperate attempt to live a middle class life.
He forced himself to work and take the job on the stock exchange in Johannesburg, but it was to no avail, seven months later, he gave up.
Instead, he began to live his life by a South African rap-poet, deeply involved in the Black Consciousness Movements (BCM) demonstrations against the apartheid system.
Increasingly Rampolokengs poetry has come to be branded as "enfant- terrible angry- voice ". To listen to Rampolokeng has been described as the "getting in the line of a crackling, rattling verbal fire.
