The Egyptian writer and doctor Nawal El Saadawi will attend the Göteborg Book Fair this year. Renowned as a leading figure in the women's movement in the Arab world, she has suffered death threats, prison time and periods of exile because of her commitment to the cause.
- Nawal El Saadawi visited the Göteborg Book Fair in 1989. It is wonderful that she will return now - she is a charismatic speaker who engages her public, a woman who drives an admirable campaign for women's rights, says Gunilla Sandin, Head of Programme at Göteborg Book Fair.
Nawal El Saadawi, who was born in 1930, has won many international literary prizes and her books have been translated into more than 30 languages.
2010 sees the publication of the sixth Nawal El Saadawi book to be translated into Swedish: Den stulna roman (Zina: The Stolen Novel), in which she describes the struggle of Arab women with a powerful voice. Den stulna romanen is published by Ordfront förlag in Sweden.
Many writers from Africa will attend this year's Göteborg Book Fair, with Africa and African literature in focus. The 26th Book Fair will be held from the 23rd - 26th September 2010 at the Swedish Exhibition Centre in Göteborg. The Book Fair welcomes 100 000 visitors every year.
